On May 7, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment informed the media of the state of surface water environmental quality in China in March and January-March 2019. According to the circular, from January to March 2019, 1940 national assessment sections were monitored by the mining-survey separation mode. There are 1861 monitoring sections in practice. The remaining 79 sections have not been monitored due to interruption of flow, traffic interruption and inability to sample during deicing period. 
Overall water quality 
In March 2019, of the 1940 national surface water assessment sections (1788 measured), the proportion of the sections with good water quality (Class I-III) was 74.3%, up by 5.8 percentage points over the same period, while the proportion of the sections with inferior Class V was 5.5%, down by 3.1 percentage points over the same period. The main pollution indicators are total phosphorus, chemical oxygen demand and ammonia nitrogen. From January to March 2019, the proportion of the surface water quality section with good quality (Class I-III) was 74.3%, which increased by 8.0 percentage points compared with the same period of last year, while that of the section with inferior Class V was 6.0%, which decreased by 3.6 percentage points compared with the same period of last year. The main pollution indicators are ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus and chemical oxygen demand. 
Water quality in each basin 
In March 2019, the proportion of water quality section I-III of seven major river basins, including the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, the Pearl River, the Songhua River, the Huaihe River, the Haihe River and the Liaohe River, as well as the northwest, southwest and Zhejiang-Fujian rivers, was 75.4%, up by 3.4 percentage points over the same period, while that of the inferior category V was 5.8%, down by 3.2 percentage points over the same period. The main pollution indicators are ammonia nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand and five-day biochemical oxygen demand. Among them, the water quality of the southwest and northwest rivers is the best, the Yangtze River Basin, Zhejiang-Fujian River and Pearl River Basin are good, while the Huaihe River, Songhua River, Yellow River, Liaohe River and Haihe River Basin are slightly polluted.
